‘When We First Met’ Trailer: Adam Devine Time Travels in Netflix Rom-Com — Watch

Devine stars in the film alongside Alexandra Daddario, flipping the script on rom-coms and the “Groundhog Day” genre of time travel romance.

Before Adam Devine and his “Workaholics” co-creators reunite on Netflix this spring in the film “Game Over, Man!,” he’ll serve as leading man in another comedy for the streaming service. In “When We First Met,” Noah (Devine) attends an engagement party and realizes that the future bride, Avery (Alexandra Daddario), is his one who got away — three years prior, their excellent first date soured when she said he had mere friend potential. Daddario is best known for her work in the two “Percy Jackson” films; she also appeared in last year’s “Baywatch” remake.

Like Tom Hanks’ Zoltar machine in “Big,” Noah time-travels back to 2014 with an assist from a enchanted photo booth. However, in his eagerness to charm Avery, he channels Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day,” anticipating Avery’s exact answer, and coming on so strong that she deems him a stalker.

“I’m not known for romantic comedy, but I thought — if I am going to do a romantic comedy it should be something like this,” said Devine in an official Netflix statement. “Something really funny.”

The film is directed by Ari Sandel — who won a 2007 Oscar for his short film “West Bank Story” — based on a script by “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” and “The LEGO Batman Movie” co-writer John Whittington (Devine voiced Barry Allen/The Flash in the latter). Originally announced in July 2016, the feature was shot that summer in New Orleans.

Netflix will debut “When We First Met” ahead of Valentine’s Day, on February 9. Watch the film’s first trailer below.

Adam Devine gets friend-zoned and time travels in When We First Met trailer

Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming original rom-com When We First Met, starring Adam DeVine and Alexandra Daddario. The new movie tells the story of how Noah (DeVine) met Avery (Daddario), “the girl of his dreams,” falls in love with her, and winds up in the dreaded friend-zone.

Years later, Noah gets another chance to win her heart thanks to a time-traveling photo booth. The film is directed by The Duff‘s Ariel Sandel and written by John Whittington from The LEGO Batman Movie.

The trailer shows Noah traveling back in time, several times, to the night he met Avery at a Halloween party where they’re both dressed up in epic pop-culture costumes: him as Garth from Wayne’s World and her as a member of the Rockford Peaches from A League of Their Own. DeVine fails, almost every time, as he tries to woo Dadaddrio’s character in a series of unfortunate and hilarious encounters.

When We First Met also costars Shelley Hennig, Andrew Bachelor, and Robbie Amell and starts streaming Feb. 9 on Netflix. Watch the trailer above.

Netflix’s When We First Met Trailer Goes Time Traveling with Adam DeVine

Netflix has released the first trailer and poster for their upcoming romantic comedy When We First Met, debuting February 9 on the streaming service. Adam DeVine stars as Noah, a young man who spends the perfect first night with Avery (Alexandra Daddario), the girl of his dreams, but gets relegated to the friend zone. He spends the next three years wondering what went wrong, until he gets the unexpected chance to travel back in time and alter that night, and his fate, over and over again. Will Noah ever get it right?

Part of this perfect first date includes the duo taking a number of silly photos in a photo booth, which Noah drunkenly revisits three years later, after his dream girl becomes engaged to be married to Ethan (Robbie Amell). He realizes that the photo booth is actually a time machine, which he uses over and over again to relive the first time they met, although it doesn’t go so well. On one instance, he reveals that he knows a bit too much about her, leading Avery and her roommate Carrie (Shelly Hennig) to conclude that he’s a stalker. The trailer also features Noah trying to get some advice on how to talk to girls from Max (Andrew Bachelor), although he takes that too far as well.

After it’s clear that Noah can’t pull off a solid pick-up line, Max tells him to be an asshole, but a “soft asshole”. The next morning, he wakes up in Avery’s bed with frosted tips, as she walks by and throws him his leather pants, as Noah realizes that he went “full asshole.” The supporting cast for this Netflix original movie includes Noureen De Wulf, Chris Wylde, Tony Cavalero, Tenea Intriago and Dean J. West. While this movie won’t be playing it theaters, it will open the same day as Warner Bros.’ The 15:17 to Paris, Universal’s Fifty Shades Freed and Sony’s Peter Rabbit.

Ari Sandel (The DUFF) directs this romantic comedy from a script by John Whittington, who makes his live-action feature writing debut after writing both of last year’s LEGO movies, The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Ninjago Movie. This marks Ari Sandel’s follow-up to his feature film debut, 2014’s The DUFF, and he also recently came aboard to direct the Goosebumps sequel for Sony Pictures as well, which is currently in pre-production. The filmmaker is also attached to direct Monster High, although it isn’t clear when that will move forward.

This will actually be the first of two Netflix movies for Adam DeVine this year, with his movie Game Over, Man, starring his fellow Workaholics co-stars/co-creators Anders Holm and Blake Anderson, arriving on March 23. Alexandra Daddario most recently starred in Baywatch and The Layover, and she has We Have Always Lived in the Castle and Nomis in post-production, with I Am Not a Bird currently in production. Netflix’s “When We First Met” is here to fill the rom-com-sized hole in our hearts

Hold on to your heartstrings, y’all, because the return of the hilarious, goofy, and adorable rom-com is nigh. That’s right, the streaming company behind hit, edgy and dark shows like Black Mirror and Mindhunter, is releasing a brand new movie next month, and it looks super cute. Netflix’s When We First Met is here to fill that rom-com-sized hole in our hearts, and we’re all about it.

When We First Met is set to premiere just in time for Valentine’s Day. And whether you’re single, in a relationship, in a situationship, or it’s complicated, you’re sure to enjoy the flick in all of it’s 2007-era goodness. Okay, well the movie isn’t actually set in 2007, but the classic romantic comedy vibes will definitely have you feeling like you’re back in the good ‘ol days. The movie stars the lovable Adam Devine (Modern Family, Workaholics) and Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch) as two best friends.

Although…Devine’s character doesn’t want it to stay that way.
Basically, Devine’s character realizes the extent of his love for Daddario’s character, who just sees him as a friend, as she announces her engagement to someone else. Devine soon goes to the bar where they first hung out three years ago and discovers that the photo booth they took adorable pics in together is actually a time machine.

From there, he keeps traveling back in time to when they first met to try and fix what he did that made the love of his life see him as just a friend. (Hopefully, in that process, he realizes you can’t force feelings…) Chaos and hijinks ensue, and Andrew Bachelor also appears as Devine’s friend with all the advice, so you know the movie will have plenty of laughs.

When We First Met debuts on February 9th, so let the official countdown to the rom-com begin!
