It’s September, and everyone’s headed back to school. In the new Collider-exclusive trailer for Re-Election, that “everyone” includes a forty-something high school dropout who’s determined to go back to where it all went wrong. Re-Election will enroll in select theaters starting October 10 in New York, and will premiere in Dallas and Atlanta on October 17. In the trailer, Adam Saunders (The Game) stars as Jimmy Bauer; thirty years ago, he lost an election for school president, and found the loss so devastating that he dropped out of school. Flash forward thirty years, and he’s working a dead-end job for his dad (Tony Danza, Who’s the Boss?) at a memorabilia store.
Seeing his old opponent now running for higher office, Jimmy’s decided that he’s going to go back to school, finish his credits, and also run for school president…and win this time. Naturally, nobody else thinks this is a good idea, especially his sister, Shawna (Patty Guggenheim, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), who also happens to be the principal. Nevertheless, he’s back in class, and he’s got a lot to learn…and not just in class. If he’s going to win, he’ll need to master modern technology, social media, and gender-neutral bathrooms. Luckily, he has Gen-Alpha guide Noa (Bex Taylor-Klaus, Scream) to help him out. Can he turn back the clock and win at the ballot box?
Who Are the Creatives Behind ‘Re-Election’?
In addition to Saunders, Danza, Guggenheim, and Taylor-Klaus, the film also stars Kym Whitley (The Upshaws), Nathalie Kelley (Motorheads), Rizwan Manji (Peacemaker), William Ragsdale (Fright Night), Lane Factor (Reservation Dogs), Paola Andino (Lisa Frankenstein), Hayley Keown (St. Denis Medical), Kaleb Naquin (Daisy Jones and the Six), and Elizabeth Newcomer (Sacrifice). The film was written and directed by Saunders; he also produced alongside Erika Hampson and Mac Hendrickson. Re-Election is distributed by Picturehouse.
Saunders made his directorial debut in 2022 with Dotty & Soul, a comedy that paired him with Leslie Uggams. Says Saunders, “In this deeply polarized political landscape, I wanted to make a fun, heartfelt, throwback political comedy — the kind of movie I loved growing up in Texas — that could be enjoyed by both sides of the political aisle. It’s a story about empathy, and personal responsibility, and how the stories we tell ourselves are the ones that shape our lives.”
Re-Election will premiere at New York City’s Regal Union Square on October 10, followed by openings on October 17 in Dallas at the Angelika Film Center and The Springs Cinema & Taphouse in Atlanta. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
